Reclaimed bricks

Secondhand or reclaimed bricks are great for building pathways, small walls, stairs, stepping stones, or feature walls where a more rustic, old fashioned or "country garden" look is preferred.

All bricks have been cleaned but may still have traces of mortar or old paint on some faces. You can expect edges to be somewhat chipped and with the softer "Handmades" in particular, some breakage may occur during transportation.

It is very difficult to show the range of colours, textures, quality etc. of old reclaimed bricks from only a few sample pieces or illustrations. These old bricks were produced by a wide range of different brick companies using different clays and different production techniques. So although the samples or illustrations will show the general style of brick that can be supplied, they will not necessarily show the complete colour range which may vary to some extent for each delivery.

All old bricks will have some degree of imperfections or damage. For example some of the corners may be chipped or slightly broken. Although the bricks are cleaned as much as possible, they will still have some traces of the old mortar on the faces. In addition one face of some bricks may have old paint on the surface which has not been removed.

Some damage during transit to the final destination may also occur due to the softness of the handmade bricks in particular. Consequently we regret that we are unable to accept any claims for damage in transit unless due to exceptional circumstances. Some damage or imperfections should be accepted and allowed for with these old bricks and may be considered as a natural feature of the bricks. Most companies who supply new bricks generally accept that damage of up to 5% would not be classed as excessive.

The brick size will also vary slightly, although the nominal or standard size for Australian bricks is 230 x 110 x 76mm. Up to 10mm variation in length however is not uncommon.

The following types of old bricks are currently available:

Old Reds

These are the most common type of reclaimed brick and vary in age from relatively new to about 50 years old. These are typically a terracotta to dark red colour and generally have a hollow (frog) in the bottom face. A popular use in Australia is for paving for constructing pathways around private homes. Typical weight is about 3.8-4.0 kgs each

Old Creams

Similar in nature to old reds but with colours ranging from light cream to apricot. Generally newer than Old Reds.

Clinkers – Red

These are usually a darker red than Old Reds and typically have either been fired at a higher temperature or for a longer time which tends to make them somewhat harder in general. The difference between Old Reds and Clinkers is that Clinkers will all have some distinct feature such as dark blue or almost black markings on at least one of the faces and may have some protrusions on at least one face. They may also be less perfectly shaped than old reds due to the protrusions. Some have a dark blue “heart” on one face surrounded by terracotta colour. They will normally have a hollow (frog) in the bottom face. Some Clinkers will appear similar to the Old Reds as the blue markings might only be visible on one or two faces, but they are still classified as Clinkers. Typical weight is about 4.0-4.3 kgs each.

Clinkers – Cream

Similar in nature to Red Clinkers but with colours ranging from light cream to apricot with some distinct dark brown or black markings. Generally newer than Red Clinkers.

Handmade sandstocks

These bricks are typically over 80 years old and were produced by hand. The colour range can be quite wide from creams, to orange to dark terracotta red. Often they will have dark blue spots on the faces. Handmades do not have any hollows (frogs) in any faces These bricks tend to be quite a lot softer than either Clinkers or Old Reds so more careful handling is needed to reduce breakage. They are widely used in Australia for pathways and in renovations of old “Victorian” style homes. Typical weight is about 3.2-3.6 kgs each.

Water adsorption in handmade sandstocks is relatively high so they are not recommended for use as paving in areas which are subject to heavy frost or snow, as the surfaces may crack.
